Explore Zanzibar: My Practical Guide for Travelers

Zanzibar, the paradise island of the Tanzanian archipelago, where thousands of visitors come each year to enjoy its stunning beaches, turquoise waters, and rich culture. Having lived on the island for a total of 8 months, here are my practical tips to ensure your stay goes as smoothly as possible.

Administrative procedures for entry into the territory

(We save the best for last)

1. Visa

To travel to Zanzibar, you need to apply for a visa. It costs €50 per person, which can be obtained online from the tanzanian government.

Although you can make this purchase online, I strongly advise you to do it at the counter as soon as you arrive, to avoid the risks of problems on the Internet (bugs, waiting for issuance, etc.). The agents at the airport are generally understanding, and the document can be completed in 5 minutes per person.

2. Travel Insurance

Furthermore, since October 2024, travel insurance is mandatory to enter the island of Zanzibar ($44 per person). I strongly advise you to pay for this insurance online and keep the QR code on your phone to facilitate checks upon exiting the plane. Link here!

3. Tourist Tax

Furthermore, throughout the island you will be required to pay a tourist tax ($5 per person per night) that is added to the displayed rate for your accommodation; it is impossible to negotiate this as it is mandated by the Tanzanian government.

Practical tips for a pleasant stay

(we're getting there)

1. Rainy season

Do not visit during the rainy season (from March to May) when it rains an average of 14 days per month, even though this does not prevent you from fully enjoying the island; the weather is less pleasant and some activities will be limited.

2. Ramadan

Zanzibar being an island where the majority of the population is Muslim, the month of Ramadan is respected by all. The sale of alcohol is prohibited in public places, and bars and nightclubs are closed (but excursions and hotel life are rarely affected).

 Excursions and Activities

(Here we are!)

Zanzibar, with its multitude of incredible landscapes, makes it important to go out and fully enjoy the island, so excursions are a must. There are many local guides, and you can find them quite easily on Facebook or on-site. In principle, the excursions will often be the same whether you go through one guide or another, as the spots are well-known to the public, and you will especially benefit in terms of prices!

Important note: Swimming with dolphins during excursions can stress the animals. For some, it is difficult to enjoy the moment under these conditions, which is why if you absolutely want to do it, the sooner the better.

 Choice of Residence Location

Avoid: the bays, algae can easily accumulate there along with other waste and dirt.

I would recommend:

- The North (Kendwa and Nungwi): Stunning white sand beaches of unparalleled beauty, numerous beach shops that bring the area to life.

- The South (Paje and Jambiani): Stunning kite surfing spots with waters in multiple shades of blue and spectacular tides that can pull the sea back over 2 km.

My Favorites from the South

1. Kae Funk: magical place to admire sunsets.

2. Hi Sky Bar: a slightly casual rooftop for a pleasant moment.

3. Jumbo Beach Party: The good vibe of Friday night.

4. Bento: For a chill dinner, there's something for everyone's taste!

5. Mtende and Salaam Cave: One of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen and a turtle cenote: the images
